This Vienna palace was built between 1714 and 1723 as a summer residence for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Prince Eugene was an important commander who freed Vienna from Turkish occupation in 1683.

Tip: Look at the roof of the Upper Belvedere Palace. It depicts an army camp from the time of Prince Eugene. The big tent in the middle is the commander’s tent. The smaller tents next to it are for the soldiers. In the round tents on the corners are the sentries.

Tip: Enjoy the view over Vienna Enjoy the beautiful view over Vienna from the Upper Belvedere Palace. This view gave the palace its name (Belvedere means „to look beautiful“).The last occupant of the palace was the Austrian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand. It was following his assassination in 1914 in Sarajevo that the First World War broke out. On the 15th May 1955, the foreign secretaries of the Allies (France, England, USA, Soviet Union) and the Austrian foreign secretary Leopold Figl signed the Austrian treaty. Austria was a free and independent country once again. Today you can find museums and 19th and 20th century art collections in the buildings. After your German course, you can admire the main works of the famous Austrian painters, Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele und Oskar Kokoschka. In the Lower Belvedere palace, you will find the baroque museum and the museum of mediaeval art.
