Learn German and experience Vienna: do a German course and discover Vienna

The Danube Tower in Vienna

Are you doing a German course in Vienna? Do you want to see some of Vienna’s sights from its heights? After one of your German courses, you should go and see the Danube Tower in Vienna. Relax after your intensive German course by enjoying a coffee or Viennese specialities and a sensational view, all from the height of 160m.

The Danube Tower has been part of the Vienna skyline for the last 35 years. It was built as the top attraction of the international horticultural show in Vienna. The Danube Tower is 252 metres high. By climbing 776 steps and passing 58 little platforms, you can get to the observation platform at 150 metres. This is a must if you are doing a German course in Vienna.

It is, of course, less strenuous if you take the lift up, which will get you up to this height in just 35 seconds. Up there, a unique panorama over Vienna awaits you after your German course. On a clear day, you can see even as far as Schneeberg and in the other direction, you can see well into Austria’s neighbouring countries to the East.

Tip: Trip in the evening after your German course

The view from the Danube Tower is particularly impressive by night. Every day until midnight, you can treat yourself to this pleasure, which the famous Austrian singer Rainhard Fendrich asks about in his song “Have you ever seen Vienna by night?” ("Haben Sie Wien schon bei Nacht gesehen?")
At the heights of 160 und 170 metres are 2 revolving restaurants, powered by 2 motors each. You can come here after your German course to enjoy the unique view over Vienna, and to sample the delicious Viennese cuisine at the same time.

Getting there from your German course

After your German course at the DeutschAkademie Wien, you can get to the Danube Tower with the underground line U1: the entrance to the underground station is 50 metres away from your German course. From Karlsplatz, take the U1 in the direction of Kagran and get off at VIC/Kaisermühlen. Change here to the bus line 20B, which takes you directly to the Danube Tower (bus stop: „Donauturm“, Danube Tower). It will take you between 25 and 40 minutes to get there from your German course. You will find the quickest way to get there from your German course on the „Wiener Linien“ website (Vienna public transport network) under Fahrplanauskunft (timetable information).
